WHAT IS THE PRODUCT OR SERVICE MENCHIES OFFERS THE CONSUMER?
Menchies offers an exceptional and high quality private label yogurt that is dispensed via a soft-serve machine and is self-served by the customers (or guests). Guests then have a large array of toppings to choose from before advancing to the counter for payment. There, the serving is weighed and priced by the ounce (or pound). There are yogurts for all discriminating tastes and diets from non-dairy and tart and non-fat to gluten free and low-carb. The milk products come from a dairy in California where cows are never treated with artificial growth hormones.
WHAT IS MENCHIE’S BUSINESS MODEL?
This business resides in a retail brick & mortar building located in a high-foot-traffic area. The hours of operation may vary by location, but typically are 11am to 10pm with an extended hour to 11pm on Friday and Saturday nights. There are 8 to 15 employees on staff with many being part-time. Franchisee’s pay a monthly royalty of 6% of sales and a monthly advertising fee of 2% of sales. Passive investment is allowed after business is established, and the owner(s) can scale back their day-to-day involvement with reliable management in place.
WHAT DOES MENCHIES OFFER THE BUSINESS OWNER?
Financial assistance is provided and, with the financial requirement met, a franchisee can qualify for a small business commercial loan from the SBA (Small Business Administration). Menchies has an active involvement with the site selection and lease negotiation to procure the most trafficked area for top earnings potential. Staff recruitment is also assisted and co-operative advertising will help the bottom line. Training consists of two weeks of the Initial Leadership Education Program at Menchie’s University in Encino, CA and onsite education before the store opening. A franchisee group call occurs weekly allowing for collaboration between franchisees.
WHO IS MENCHIES LOOKING FOR?
Menchies franchisees come from all different backgrounds. Restaurant experience is not required since the shop is self-serve and a relatively simple operation compared to other type restaurants that serve a wide range of menu items. A heavy business background is also not required, but simply a good head for numbers and the ability to lead a team effectively. Current franchisees range from corporate executives, to diverse entrepreneurs to husband & wife teams. Menchies looks for people passionate about the brand and passionate about people, and that have a strong community outreach attitude. Candidates should have at least $100,000 liquid capital, good credit and a net worth of at least $350,000.
HOW MUCH DOES A MENCHIES FRANCHISE COST?
HOW MUCH CAN AN OWNER OF A MENCHIES EARN?
Many Franchisors do not disclose earnings potential because too many factors are involved determining how successful a franchise can be. Elements such as location, skillset of the franchisee, economic climate etc., all play a part in the success or failure of a franchise. This information is often reserved for those individuals who are seriously considering a Menchies franchise and who fit the profile of who they are looking for to be awarded a franchise. With that said, Menchies does offer earnings guidance in their FDD Item 19, and serious contenders can also gather earnings information from existing franchisees.
MY OWN OPINION
I visited Menchies in Encino California in June of 2015. I was attending a “Discovery Day“. This is when a franchisor invites potential franchisees to visit their corporate office and spend the day learning all there is to learn about the franchise. Menchies also makes a habit of inviting brokers as well, to educate them on the brand and thus making them better equipped to coach their clients. This is by far, one of my favorite franchises.
After arriving at the corporate office, we gathered in a reception area where 2 yogurt machines were available to us for sampling the yummy dairy concoction. After some mingling with other brokers and potential franchisees, we were led into a large conference room where we would spend the next several hours. The chairs were conveniently labeled with our names and our chair contained a gift bag of various goodies for us to take home. The day began with several presentations from top team members of the brand and a visit from the co-founders Danna and Adam Caldwell. This is when I learned where the name “Menchies” came from. A “mensch” is a German word which, in Yiddish, means “a good person”. When Danna and Adam were dating, a conversation arose whereas Adam called Danna a Mensch. She responded saying that the term was typically expressed to a man, for which Adam then replied “Well then, you can be my Menchie”, and that was when the brand “Menchies” was born.
The most educational part of the day for me was learning their method of branding. They explained in detail, how the top companies go about conveying their message to the public and here is the gist of it: you tell people WHY you do what you do, not WHAT you sell or make. People don’t just want to buy something, they want to feel an engagement with something and that alone, is simply the beauty of this brand: They want to make people happy! And oh, by the way, they just happen to sell the most wholesome yogurt around.

- Menchie’s is such a great concept. Its serve-yourself system gives you the opportunity to have as much and as little of whatever delicious frozen yogurt and toppings you want. The flavors change regularly and my favorites are original, cake batter and blueberry. There are countless toppings ranging from brownies and hot fudge to mochi and m&ms to blackberries and mango. After you create your edible masterpiece, it is weighed and priced accordingly. Menchie’s has both indoor and outdoor seating and parking is easy to find. Definitely better than Pinkberry and its other competitors.

- We come here every week and love it. The reason for four stars is sometimes they don’t have my flavors. My favorites are cake batter and vanilla. Their topping selection is really good as well. I am a huge reeses cup fan and I like that they have the chopped up kind instead of the mini cups
Although, not the only self serve frozen yogurt franchise around, Menchies earns it’s reputation by having developed a strong branding strategy, especially with their dedication to community involvement and neighborhood engagement. The theme of being a happy place to go and visit with friends and family has been a big part of their growth to over 500 stores since they started franchising in 2008. If you have the capital, some business savvy and a sense of community, Menchies is, in my opinion, the BEST frozen yogurt franchise opportunities out there.
The developers of the Menchies brand have launched a new brand and opened the first store in July of 2015….check out MidiCi Neapolitan Pizza which is already experiencing huge growth.
